WW1 Model 1916, Patton Saber, Fencing Training Mask

World War I era Army Model 1916 Infantry Fencing Mask, often times referred to as the 1916 Patton Mask. It was designed for use with the U.S. Model 1913 Cavalry Saber also known as the Patton Saber. Similar infantry fencing masks were made by A.G. Spaulding & Bros. for the U.S. Government between 1917-1918.

There are no marking on this particular mask. Some of the soft leather-lined padding is left along the top and cheeks, and a quilted upper chest and throat protector that extends about six inches below the chin. Leather straps and metal buckles would insure a good fit to the wearer's head. Most of the leather straps have rotted away on this one. A spring-loaded pad secures the mask in the back of the wearer's head.
